Investment companies are entities that are primarily engaged in the business of investing in securities or other assets. These companies invest funds they receive from investors on a collective basis, with each investor sharing in any profits or losses in proportion to their interest in the company. The US investment company space is vast, with trillion dollars invested in the different types of investment vehicles that range from mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) to closed-end funds and unit investment trusts. The most popular type of investment company is the mutual fund, which accounts for nearly 90% of the US investment company market. Investment companies (and particularly mutual funds) are favored by retail investors. In the US, almost half of all households own mutual funds. Over a quarter of US stocks are held by investment funds, which are also key investors in US government and municipal bonds, and commercial paper.

In this course, you will learn about the key features of the main types of an investment company, with a particular focus on mutual funds.
